“We are rationing bread to people.”

The daily portion of bread in Pervomaysk is 250 grams per person. This town can be easily compared with Leningrad. In Leningrad one person was given a quarter. Having got the bread, people are going to basements. The town has been living in the basements for several months already.

Speech of the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko: “…because we will have work, and they won’t. We will have pensions, and they won’t. We will take care of children and pensioners, and they won’t. Our children will go to schools and kindergartens, and their children will sit in the basements. They can do nothing. And this is the way how we will win the war.”

- Mummy, don’t we have bread?
- Bread? No, we have run out of bread.
- Have we run out?
- Yes.
- Is this a tasty roll?
- Yes.

All night long the people at Sverdlovsk bread-baking complex were baking bread for Pervomaysk. It will allow increase the daily portion from a quarter to a half-loaf. We left before dawn to deliver the hot bread to starving Pervomaysk. The distance to the town is 170 kilometres of battlefield roads.

- Good afternoon!
- Good afternoon.
- Show your documents! Where are you going?
- I’m carrying bread to Pervomaysk.
- How much? Open! That is all, close.

Nikolai Kukharev, a driver of the bread-baking complex: “People are different. Im carrying bread, but you never know what is carried by other man… That’s right… If they don’t check, anything can happen…”

We ran across the town quickly and didn’t come under fire.
- Here we are in Pervomayka brought bread for people.

The shelling started in Pervomaysk itself. We have to distribute bread accompanied by whistle of mines and shells. People have to run to reach us.
- How much do you need? Run, be quick, there’s fire!

Yevgeniy Ishchenko, the commandant of Pervomaysk: “People are running. People see we are distributing bread freely, and now the shelling of Pervomaysk is going on. People are running up quickly, taking bread and running back as they fear for their lives. And this is a real danger as everything around is broken, everything is destroyed.”

- What is your name?
- Sasha.
- Where do you sleep?
- Here.
- Are you taking shelter here?
- When there is no shelling, we are not scared. When there is shelling, we are scared.

- Here we have various bed patients, children, others…
- Here we have old women, disabled people.
- Quiet! Dont close ears! These are good men.
- There is an old woman there lying.
- It is the height of impudence! Bastards! People are galloping for bread! Fascists!
- It is Poroshenko who should be shot. He should be not just shot but executed, taken apart, such a bastard. For the children… like this… scared.

- We made a kind of toilet here for children. Here is a toilet for the disabled. There is a toilet for little children. And then we are taking the pails outside.

Sometimes the house is fired so severely that the basement walls are shaking.

- Ouch, we were crying here! And it was so terrible, it’s impossible. It was directly our house fired.

The Pervomaysk residents are under shelling for three months of the truce already. The town is slowly but surely ruined. The town has become almost depopulated. It is a phantom town looking directly at the positions of the Ukrainian army with its empty eye socket windows.

Tatiana Silina, a resident of Pervomaysk: “Here are the remains of my tableware, of my sunflowers. I liked collecting tableware. My kitchen was full of sunflowers. Here I kept childrens shoes.”

Tatiana is a mother of three children. She is again and again coming to the ruins of her flat. Only two rooms have remained of it. The shell has destroyed several floors in the staircase.
- This is all that remained of my flat.
Tatiana has brought up her children here. Those were the small mercies of provincial mining town. A separate flat… Everything went to the bow-wows. It is fine that they themselves have survived.
- There are flowers standing there. People lived there. People lived and enjoyed their lives. You see, what is happening!
Wounded neighbours were taken to the hospital, killed – to the morgue. Cats and dogs are abandoned in the destroyed flats. And not all of them have survived after the shelling. People are not given even a short rest, the shelling starts unexpectedly. Sometimes the gun layer chooses a specific target.

- They are firing directly at the same house for the second day. We do not know where to run and what to do.
- And who is this killed man?
- This is a public utilities service man. He worked here, boarded up windows and covered with film. People have nowhere to go. I don’t know when it will end.

The Ukrainian artillery is firing at Pervomaysk. The militias are returning fire to its positions with the localized strikes from the captured howitzer “Msta”. TheMstahowitzer is called a sharpshooter for its accuracy.
- “Msta-B” is a very accurate weapon. It is manufactured in the year of 87. As of 2013 the Ukrainian army has only 118 items in the inventory.
It is impossible to miss the aim as mainly all artillery men are natives from the town of Lisichansk across the front line. There are the militiashouses and relatives there.

Vladimir Poltinnik, artillery battery commander: “There are only three real artillery men here, in our battery. All the rest are taught by us. Here we have firemen, policemen, businessmen, hard-working miners, turners… everybody. They can do everything, we taught them”.

Vladimir Poltinnik is a former businessman from Lisichansk. He was taught to manage the howitzer as early as he was serving in the Ukrainian army.

Vladimir Poltinnik: “Frankly speaking, it is a strange war… military men are fighting and civilians are suffering, and that is true for both sides. And I pity those boys. I was serving in the Ukrainian army. Thanks to the Ukrainian army I know the gunnery. But I was serving together with those normal boys”.

- Does it mean you have to fire shells into your colleagues?

Vladimir Poltinnik: “Yes, I have to fire at my teachers as well. At the officers who taught me. They taught me well”.

Unexpectedly, a spotter says that Ukrainian Grad-type rocket systems have started.

- Strike ground! Down below ground level! Expecting theyll return the fire.

-
Stand clear!

Grad-type missiles landed far away. The crew is preparing to send the next large-calibre sms.

- For Pervomaysk.

- Fire!

Artillery duels continue all day long. In the evening one can again see flashes in the town. Grad-type missiles landed together with snow. The commandant of Pervomaysk is going to check the destructions. He was reported that the missiles had hit the already destroyed food supply depot.

- Those were Grad-type missiles. They fired at us and the town. Do you here the bursts?
- Sanya, I can teach you how to protect yourself.
- Do, please!
- Look this way! What is this?
- Is it a fig?
- Not a fig! What
is this? Its a kukish, an old pagan symbol! It turns away the evil eye, devilry, banderovites, stupid mines and silly bullets.

When death is too close, one can believe everything. The militia man Roman is under fire for several months, and it is not a good thing to tell him about the superstitious beliefs when Ukrainian Grad-type rocket systems are working.

- This is a load-carrying element, a rocket one. After
the explosion the load-carrying elements land here.

Yevgeniy Ishchenko: “This is a food supply depot. There were food products here, everything for the town. Again! Listen! Here Grad-type systems are working. They are firing at our side. As usually, Roma stuck his fingers up showing two pagan symbols”.
Roma: “Turn away banderovites, all disasters, evil eye, as grandmother showed”.

Yevgeniy Ishchenko: “They are landing in our town. Remember! These are Grad-type systems working”.

Only in the morning we got to know where the missiles had landed.

- A
hero-town Pervomaysk.

A lot of missiles landed in the district of private houses. All
yard is covered in blood. The commandant of Pervomaysk is inspecting the ruins and comes back carrying a man’s leg.

- I met this man more than once. I saw his face, I talked to him. And now Im collecting the pieces of him. Do you understand how it is to realize all that!
- There is one more fragment.

He was a watchman guarding a house for refugees. It looks like he has not realized what has happened. They fired from the distance of about 20 kilometres from here. The missiles landed the street noiselessly.

-
Here they lived. It looks like he slept here. Here is a rug. He failed to reach here. It is like a sleeping accommodation here. Probably, he slept here during the shelling.
- He has failed to reach the basement.
- He was standing just about here.
- The missiles were coming from the side of Popasnaya. I saw the direction of the flight. I was just in the street.
- So, it was not militias shelling, was it?
- It’s nonsense! What
you are speaking about! They live here, here their families are! No one will fire at his own children and elderly! Hello, old man!
-
Hello.

79-years old Yuriy Shchur has survived the second shelling in his life and the second destroyed house. The first one was in his childhood, the second one – in the twilight of his life.

- Yes, this is the second war for me. I was born in the Rostov region, in Proletarskaya. And was wounded 6 years old in the year of 1941.
- How were you wounded?
- In the leg.
- Was it a raid?
- A bomb hit the house and wounded in the leg here. My sister was wounded in the head.

This
time it ended without wounds.

-
Its better to be killed than wounded. I’m already indifferent to all this. I dont knowWhat are they thinking about there? I slept here. One shell passed by. It landed at a distance, probably. And then was the second one, yet more powerful. It stroke, everything began to fall down, the light went out.

He was alone in the house, guarding his things. He sent his wife to Pervomaysk to the shelter. They have been living from hand to mouth for several months.

Praskovya Krapivtsova: “Yes, we are given a half-loaf for two. There,
in the square. The queues are very long. One will want nothing waiting for that half-loaf.
- And what do you eat besides bread?
- Nothing. Nothing more.

- Everything is destroyed.
- And we do not receive the retired pay. We have not been receiving the retired pay since July. Just imagine how one can live.

Now they do not have even a roof over their heads. They are going to the basement of the hospital. There is one of the town shelters there. There is nothing else to go. And several days ago their house was plundered by marauders. The only valuable thing left for the olds is an axe, but it is not their own.

- I’ll take it to the
neighbour for security.
- We were plundered, and he presented us the axe. We’ll return it back to him.

During several months of fighting Pervomaysk lost almost 500 civilians. The
town is half-encircled. From one side there is a Debaltsevo group alignment, and from the other side there is a Bakhmutovka road with its powerful roadblocks. The militias are trying to move them as far as possible. The most disturbing is the 29th roadblock near the settlement of Donetskiy.

- They are sounding the alarm for schools and kindergartens. The second street here is completely ruined with Grad-type missiles. It
s fine that there were no victims. They are firing directly at people.
- Is it known who is at that roadblock?
- It’s unknown. They say, “Dnieper” is situated there. But we saw, all of them are dressed in black. The distance is 700-800 metres and we can see.

The unit commander is a Cossack with broad and thick beard. Naturally, his cover name can be only “Babai”. Recently Babai has got reinforcement, a volunteer Rafael from Brazil. He served in the police, fought against drug trafficking groups, and now he became a Cossack.

- You are a full-grown Cossack already. What does it mean – being a Cossack?
- To defend Russian territory, to defend Orthodox faith, to defend Tsar.

The Brazilian Cossack has been fighting for Faith, Tsar and Fatherland for three months already. Before that, Rafael studied medicine in Kursk. There
he leant Russian.

- Do your friends, relatives in Brazil know where you are? And how do they treat that?
- Yes, my parents and all my family – parents, sister, brother and all friends – know that I’m here to support Russia.
- Does it mean that they support?
- Yes.
- Do they worry about you?
- Certainly, they do. They… I would say they are glad because this is the thing that should be done. We are right, here we should defend Russian territory, and we will win.
- He’s a good bold-spirited guy. I think we’ll fight well together. We’ll make it hot for them, won’t we, Rafael?
- Yes.

Babai is allotting tasks to Cossacks. They will act in two groups.

- Thirty metres from poplars. You will shoot and see…
- Is it to the right and to the left?
- You will stand to the right. Thirty
metres to the right, yes. Youll start working. He will work out, you will work out. The first worked out will leave. Have you understood everything? Come on! Go ahead!

They put a large-calibre machine gun “Utios” in the minibus, and an automatic grenade launcher – in the rather old VAZ 2108. There is a place left for Rafael there. He will protect the grenade launcher man. We are following his group. Here is a modern cart! Cossacks call them “babaiki”.

- Shoot only on command!

Rafael and several more fighters have dropped flat in the field in deep snow. It is unusual for the Brazilian, but he stands firm.

- Is everything well? Is it cold?
- It’s not cold!
- Guys, do not show you. Keep waiting until it begins.

It
has begun. The bullets were swishing so we could not lift up heads. Militias managed to come close to the roadblock the defendants of which are permanently firing at the town and villages, and now they are trying to neutralize the weapon emplacements.

- Guys, move up, move up here!
- Draw off! Draw off! Draw off!

- Should we draw off?
- Yes!

It turned out that the enemy attack teams had moved towards Cossacks from the roadblock. They had dropped flat in the forest belts and met militias by mass barrage.
Mortars start working. We have hardly managed to get out of snowdrifts. The “babaika” with Rafael and shell bursts remained behind.

- Good heavens! Thank goodness the car has got out. I thought that was all over, guys. Phew, thank goodness!

Here is Rafael. The car is skidding badly. Fragments of shells damaged the wheel and radiator.

- That’s nice… Again they damaged the wheel and radiator, look.

Alexander Gorbenko: “And they have immediately started shooting mines from the side directly at us”.
- So, that’s fine we haven’t gone that road, isn’t it?
- Yes, yes, yes, that’s fine we’ve gone up and the guys have drawn off in time! Have drawn off from there, from the positions!
- Again you are born with a silver spoon in mouth, aren’t you?
- Obviously!

The Brazilian is getting out of the luggage boot, all covered with snow, passionless.

- Have come under fire?
- Yes! We hit the roadblock. We were ordered to draw off, we drew off.
- Were you shelled with mines?
- Uh huh. That
s all.
-
Were you scared?
-
No, its normal! We run every day… so to say… have got accustomed already.

The second group is also returning but something is wrong.

- Go away, go away!

- Babai is wounded, Babai is wounded!
- Gently, careful!
- Hold him… Be quick!

- What has happened? Was a sniper there?

It is not Babai wounded but a militia man Kolya.

- They shot from the forest, from the forest belt.
- You were waited for, weren’t you?
- Yes. So
it goes. Let’s… we are getting ready now…
- Who is the fighter?
- Good fighter, Kolya-Tarakan.
- Is he native?
- Yes, he’s native. We live close to each other.

- Babai is fine.

The wound is severe, in the head.

- Hold on, brother! Don’t go out, don’t go out!
- Guys, he is unconscious. Kolya, hold on, brother!
- Give the first-aid pack!
- First-aid pack!
- Don’t go out, don’t go out, hold on!
- Hold on, hold on, Kolya!
- Here is a syringe! Kolya, Kolya, hold on!
- Two anti-shock doses in one syringe!
- Hold on, brother, hold on!
- Kolenka, hold on!
- Someone, take off the outfit!
- Kolya, Kolya, everything will be fine!

The military first aid came in no minute. But they didn’t manage to bring the militia man to the hospital alive. He bled to death.

Parfois tireur sélectionne un but précis.

Suite 9 - A 15 minutes

Vladimir Poltinnik ancien homme d'affaires Lisitchansk.

"Grad" a frappé loin.

Voici dormi ici.

- Uh-huh. Ce est tout.
- Aviez-vous peur?
- Non, ce est normal! Déjà .. comment dire chaque jour ... (inaudible terme?) Déjà.

00:00 - 08:00

- Guten Tag!
- Guten Tag!
- Ihre Papiere, bitte. Wo fahren Sie hin?
- Ich habe Brot für Perwomajsk.
- Viel? Machen Sie auf! Es reicht, machen Sie zu.

Nikolaj Kucharew, Fahrer des Brotkombinats: „Es gibt unterschiedliche Leute. Ich bringe das Brot. Wer weiß, was jemand anderer transportieren kann...

- Leise! Mach Deine Ohren nicht zu. Diese Männer sind nicht böse.
- Dort haben wie eine bettlägerige Oma.
- Sind sie total schamlos geworden? Was für Kreaturen!
- Poroschenko müsste man erschießen. So etwas... total verängstigt...

- Dort stehen Blumen.

09:00 - 19:00

- Lass mal gucken!
- Schaue mal, was ist das? (und zeigt ein Medaillon am Hals)
- Eine Feigenhand?
- Welche Feigenhand, nein!

Wovon sprechen Sie? Hier wohnen sie, hier sind ihre Familien. Wovon reden Sie?

BREAD OF PERVOMAYSK

We are handing out bread to people.
This town can be easily compared with besieged Leningrad during the war.
In Leningrad one person was also given a quarter of bread.
In Leningrad it was also a quarter of bread per person.
After they've got the bread, people go down to the basements
from the speech of Ukrainian President
Poroshenko:
“… so, we will have work, and they won’t,
We will have pensions, and they won’t.
We will take care of children and pensioners,
and they won’t.
Our children will go to schools and nurseries, and their children will hide in the basements.
They will not be able to do anything.
And this is our way to win the war!
- Mummy, do we have any bread?
- Bread? No, we have run out of bread.
- Is it finished?
- Yes.
All night long the people at Sverdlovsk Bakery were baking bread for Pervomaysk.
That would allow to increase the daily rationing
from a quarter to a half-loaf.
We are leaving before dawn to deliver the bread to starving Pervomaysk while it's still hot.
The distance to the town is 170 kilometres
of battlefield roads.
- Good afternoon!
- Good afternoon.
- Show your documents please!
- Where are you going?
- I’m carrying bread to Pervomaysk.
Open, please!
That is all, you can close it.
Nikolai Kukharev, a bakery driver:
People are different. I’m carrying bread,
for example,
but you never know what the other
person is carrying.
That’s alright.
If they don’t check, anything can happen…
We get to the town quickly and were lucky
not to come under fire.
Here we are in Pervomaysk, bringing
bread for people.
But he shelling has started in Pervomaysk itself.

We have to distribute bread accompanied
by mines and shells.
People are getting to us by short dashes.
- How much do you need? Run, be quick,
it's shelling!
Yevgeniy Ishchenko, the commandant of Pervomaysk:
People are running. People see we are distributing bread for free, but the shelling of Pervomaysk is going on.
People are running up quickly, grab the bread and run back for dear life, because they fear for their lives.
And the danger is real, as everything around is broken, everything is destroyed.

- What is your name?
- Sasha.
- Where do you sleep?
- Here.
- Is it your shelter here?
- When they don't bomb us, we are not scared. When they bomb us, we are scared.
- We have all sorts of people here - bed patients, children, others…
- Here we have old women, disabled people

- Don’t cover your ears! These are good men
- Here is an old woman lying there
- Shame on them! Bastards!
People have to race for a piece of bread! Fascists!
- It is Poroshenko who should be shot!
- He should be not just shot but executed,
torn into peaces. Such a bastard!
- Children… they are so scared.
- We made a kind of toilet for children here.
- Here is a toilet for the disabled.
And this one is for little ones.
And then we empty the pails outside
Sometimes they shoot the house so severely that the basement walls are shaking.
We were so terrified, we were shouting in here!
And it was so terrible, it was impossible. They
were shooting right at our house.
The Pervomaysk residents are under fire for three months of the truce already.

The town, slowly but surely, turns into ruines.
The ghost-town is looking towards the positions of the Ukrainian army with its empty eye sockets of brocken windows.
- Here are the remains of my tableware.
Tatiana Silina, a resident of Pervomaysk: These are my favourite sunflowers.
I liked collecting tableware. My kitchen was full of sunflowers.
Here I used to keep children’s shoes.
Tatiana is a mother of three. She keeps coming back to the ruins of her flat.
Only two rooms have remained.
The shell has destroyed several floors in the house.
- This is all that remained of my flat.
Tatiana has brought up her children here.
Those were the little joys of provincial
mining town:
A separate flat… Her world has collapsed.
Thank goodness they've survived themselves.
- See the house plants over there?
People lived there and enjoyed their lives.
Can you see, what is happening!

The wounded neighbours were taken to hospital, the dead ones – to the morgue.
Cats and dogs are left in the ruined flats.
And not all of them have survived the shelling.
People are not given even a short rest, the shelling starts unexpectedly.
Sometimes the gun layer chooses a specific target.
- They are firing directly at the same house second day in a row.
We do not know where to go and what to do.
- And who is this man who was killed?
- This is a public utilities service man.
He worked here, he was boarding up windows and covering them with film.
People have nowhere to go.
I don’t know when it will all end.

The Ukrainian artillery is firing at Pervomaysk.
The militias are returning fire to its positions with the localized strikes from the captured howitzer “Msta”.
The “Msta” howitzer is called a sharpshooter
for its accuracy.
- “Msta-B” is a very precise weapon.
It was manufactured in 1987.
In 2013 the Ukrainian Army had only 118
of them in in armoury.
It is impossible to miss anyway as almost all of the artillery men are the locals from Lisichansk - the town from the other side of the front line.
Their houses are there as well as their relatives.
Vladimir Poltinnik, artillery battery commander:
- There are only three real artillery men here,
in our battery. All the rest are taught by us.
We have firemen, policemen - all sorts of people!
Businessmen, hard-working miners, turners…
They can do anything, they've learned everything!
Vladimir Poltinnik is a former businessmen from Lisichansk. He was taught how to manage the howitzer while serving in the Ukrainian army.
- To be honest ... This damn war ...
The military men are fighting and civilians from both sides are suffering.
I pity those boys. I was serving in the
Ukrainian army.
Thanks to the Ukrainian army for
teaching me artillery.
But I was serving together with the normal guys.
It mean you have to shoot into your former colleagues?
Yes, and I have to fire at my teachers as well.
At the officers who taught me.
Well, they taught me well…

Unexpectedly, a spotter reports that
Ukrainian Grads (multiple rocket launchers)
have started to shoot.
Lie down in the pit!
Below ground level
... waiting for a retaliatory strike!
For the Motherland!
Grad hit far away in a distance.
The crew is preparing to send the next
large-calibre SMS.
"For Pervomaysk"
Fire!
Artillery duels continue all day long.
At night the flares start to flash again
above the town.
Grad (translates - "hail") was falling down
together with the snow.
The commandant of Pervomaysk is going to check the destructions.
He got the report that the missiles hit
the food supply depot, which was already destroyed before.
They fired at us from "Grad".
They shelled the town.
- Do you hear the explosions?
- teach you how to protect yourself:
- Look at my lucky charm!
Do you know what it is?
- "Dulya"?
- Not "dulya", It is "kukish" - an old pagan talisman!
It gives you protection from the evil eye, devilry, banderovites, stupid mines and silly bullets.
When death is near, one can believe even in "kukish".
The militiaman Roman was under fire
for several months,
and it is not a good time to tell him about the superstitions, especially when Ukrainian Grads are working.
This is a carrying part of a missle.
After the explosion, the load-carrying elements drop down here.
Yevgeniy Ishchenko, the commandant of Pervomaysk:
This was our a food warehouse, the food supply for the town was kept in here.
Again! Listen! The Grads are working right now.

- They are firing at our side.
Roma, as usual, sticks his fingers up, showing his pagan symbols.
An ancient sign to repel those stinky banderovites, an evil eye and other troubles,
the way my grandma showed me!
They are landing in our town.
Remember the sound! These are exactly how Grads are working.
Only in the morning we found out where the missiles had landed.
- A hero-city Pervomaysk.
A bunch of missiles fell in the district of
private houses. All yard is covered in blood.
The commandant of Pervomaysk is inspecting the the ruins and comes back with a human leg.
- I often met this man on a street.
I knew his face, I used to talk to him.
And now I’m collecting pieces of him.
Do you realize how hard it is to accept all of that!
One more fragment ...
He was a watchman guarding a house for refugees.
It looks like he hasn't realized
what has happened.
They fired from a distance of about 20 kilometres away from here.
The missiles landed on the street noiselessly.
They lived in here. It looks like he slept here.
Here is his rug.
He hasn't managed to hide in here. It looks like his sleeping place here.
Probably, he slept here during the shelling.
- He hasn't managed to reach the basement.
- He was standing just about here.
The missiles were coming from the side of Popasnaya.
I saw the direction of the flight. I was just outside.
- So, it wasn't militias shelling, was it?
- It’s nonsense! What you are talking about!
They live here, their families are here!
What you are talking about!
Who will shoot at their own children and elderly!

- Hello, dedushka!
- Hello.
79-years old Yuriy Shchur has survived the second shelling in his life,
and his house was destroyed twice.
The first time - in his childhood, the second - in
the twilight of his life.
Yuriy Shchur, a citizen of Pervomaysk:
- This is my second war.
I was born in the Rostov region, in Proletarskaya. And I was wounded when I was 6, it was in 1941.
- Where were you wounded?
- In the leg.
- Was it an air-raid?
- A bomb hit the house
and wounded my leg in here. My sister was wounded in the head.
This time it ended without any wounds.
I'd rather be killed than wounded.
I don't care anymore ...
I don’t know…
What are they thinking about?
I slept here. One shell flew over.
It landed in a distance, probably. And then there was the second one, much more powerful.
It hit and everything began to crumbling down from the celling, the lights went out.
He was alone in the house, guarding his belongings. He sent his wife to Pervomaysk to the bombshelter.
They have been living from hand to mouth for several months.
Praskovya Krapivtsova, a citizen of Pervomaysk: We are given a half-loaf for two.
Over there, in the square.
The queues are very long. One should stand for so long to get this half-loaf - you don't want anything at the end.
- And what do you eat apart from bread?
- Nothing. Nothing else.
- Everything is destroyed.
- And we do not receive any pension. We have not been receiving the pension since July. Just imagine how one can live.
Just imagine how one can live.
Now they do not have even a roof over their heads. They are going to the basement in the hospital.
There is one of the town's bombshelters there. There is nowhere else to go.
And recently their house was plundered by marauders. The only valuable thing left - was an axe, but it is not their own.
I’ll take it to the neighbour for security.
We were robbed, and he presented us an axe. We’ll return it back to him.

During several months of fighting Pervomaysk has lost almost 500 civilians.
The town is half-encircled. From one side there is a Debaltsevo military unit, and from the other - a Bakhmutovka road with its powerful (Ukrainian) roadblocks.
The militias are trying to push them away as far as possible.
The most troublesome is the 29th roadblock near the settlement of Donetskiy.

- They shoot the schools and nurseries from Grads.
The second street here is completely ruined by Grads. It’s lucky that there were no victims.
They are bluntly shelling the people.
- Who is at that roadblock?
- No one knows for sure.
Some say that “Dnieper” is situated there. They are dressed in black uniform. It's in a distance of 700-800 metres and we could see.
The unit commander is a Cossack with broad and thick beard.
Naturally, his callsign can be only “Babai”
Recently Babai has got reinforcement - Rafael, a volunteer from Brazil.
He served in the police, fought against drug trafficking groups, and now he became a Cossack.
You are a proper Cossack now? What does it mean for you - to be a Cossack?
To defend Russian land, to defend Orthodox faith, to defend Tsar.
The Brazilian Cossack has been fighting for Faith, Tsar and Fatherland for three months already.
Before that, Rafael studied medicine in Kursk. There he learnt Russian.
Do your friends and family in Brazil know where you are? And what do they think about it?

Yes, all my family – my parents, my sister, brother and all friends - they know that I’m here to support Novorossiya.
- So, they support you?
- Yes.
- Do they worry about you?
- Of course they do. But… I would say they are glad because this is the thing that has to be done.
We are on the right side. Here we should defend Russian territory, and we will win.
- He’s a good bold-spirited guy. I think we’ll fight together well. We’ll make it hot for them, won’t we, Rafael?
- Yes.
Babai is allocating tasks for Cossacks. They will act in two groups.
- Thirty metres from poplars. You will shoot and see…
- Is it to the right or to the left?
You will stand to the right. Thirty metres to the right, yes.
You’ll start working.
He will work out, you will work out. The first one who worked out will leave.
Have you understood everything?
Come on, come on! Go ahead!

They load a large-calibre machine gun “Utyos" into the minibus, and automatic grenade launcher into a rather old VAZ 2108.
Next to it there is place for Rafael. He will cover up the grenade-launcher gunner.
We are following his group. Here is a modern "Tachanka"!
Cossacks call them “Babaika”.
Rafael and several other fighters are lie down flat in the field in deep snow.
The Brazilian is not used to it but he holds on.
- Is everything alright? Are you cold?
- I'm not!
- Don't raise your head! Keep waiting until it begins.
It's started. The bullets whistle around, so it's impossible to lift your head.
The Militias managed to come very close to the roadblock, the one which is constantly shelling the populated areas, and now they are trying to suppress the enemy firing points.
Guys, move up, move up here!
We're going! We’re going!

It turned out that the the enemy assault groups have advanced towards the Cossacks from the roadblock.
They hid in the woods and met the militias
with heavy fire.
The mortars start working. We have hardly managed to get out of snow drifts.
The “babaika” with Rafael and the sound of explosions are behind us.
Good heavens! Thank God the car has manage to get through. I thought that's the end of us, guys. Phew, thank goodness!
And here is Rafael. The car is skidding - the shell fragments got into the wheel and a radiator.
They've started shelling us straight away, from the side,
- So, it's good that we haven’t gone that road, isn’t it?
Alexander Gorbenko, the fighter:
- Yes, yes, that’s good we’ve gone up and the guys have drew back in time!
left the positions
- You were born under a lucky star, aren't you?
- That's righ!
The Brazilian is getting out of the boot, all covered with snow, cool as a cucumber.
- You got under the fire?
- We did! We shelled the roadblock. We were ordered to draw off, so we did.
- You were shelled with mines?
- Yep. That’s all
- Was it scary?
- That's alright! I mean ...
now it's usual thing
The second group is coming back, but something is not right.
- Out of the way!
Babai is wounded!
- Gently, careful!
- Hold him… Be quick!
- What's happened? Was it a sniper
It's not Babai who was wounded
but militiaman Kolya.
- They shot from the woods
- They were waiting for you?
- Yes … there we are

- Who is the fighter?
- A good fighter, Kolya-Tarakan
- Is he local?
- Yes, he is. We are neighbours.
- Babai is fine.
The wound is severe, it's in the head.
- Hold on, brother! Don’t go out, don’t go out!
- Guys, he is unconscious. Kolya, hold on, brother!
- Give the first-aid pack!
- Don’t go out, hold on!
- Hold on, Kolya!
- Here is a syringe! Kolya, Kolya, hold on!
- Two anti-shock doses in one syringe!
- Hold on, brother, hold on!
- Kolenka, hold on!
- Kolya, Kolya, everything will be fine!
The military first-aid car came in no time.
But they didn’t manage to bring the militiaman to the hospital alive.
He died of blood loss.

BREAD OF PERVOMAYSK

We are handing out bread to people.
The daily portion of bread in Pervomaysk is 250 grams per person.
This town can be easily compared with besieged Leningrad during the war.
In Leningrad one person was also given a quarter of bread.
In Leningrad it was also a quarter of bread per person.
After they've got the bread, people go down to the basements
The town has been living in the basements for several months already.
from the speech of Ukrainian President
- Yes.
- Is this a tasty roll?
- Yes.
All night long the people at Sverdlovsk Bakery were baking bread for Pervomaysk.
That would allow to increase the daily rationing
from a quarter to a half-loaf.
We are leaving before dawn to deliver the bread to starving Pervomaysk while it's still hot.
The distance to the town is 170 kilometres
of battlefield roads.
- Good afternoon!
- Good afternoon.
- Show your documents please!
- Where are you going?
- I’m carrying bread to Pervomaysk.
Open, please!
That is all, you can close it.
Nikolai Kukharev, a bakery driver:
People are different. I’m carrying bread,
for example,
but you never know what the other
person is carrying.
That’s alright.
If they don’t check, anything can happen…
We get to the town quickly and were lucky
not to come under fire.
Here we are in Pervomaysk, bringing
bread for people.
But the shelling has started in Pervomaysk itself.

It means you have to shoot into your former colleagues?

It hit and everything began to crumble down from the celling, the lights went out.

Rafael and several other fighters are lying down flat in the field in deep snow.

- That's right!
