"The D-Day experience", Richard Holmes
Montgomery's letter on 8-6-1944:
"8. Snipering in beach areas has been very troublesome, a result of para 7 (in wich he writes about the fierce resistance his troops encounter). The roads have been far from safe and we have lost several good officers. I have been all right myself, though I have toured the area all day. There have been women snipers, presumably wives of German soldiers, the Canadians shot 4 women snipers."
Mark Bando “Breakout at Normandy”:
“several 2nd Armoured men who encounted German women. One was killed driving a Hummel.”
By 1944 the Nazis had almost a half million women in uniform serving as support troops. The Luftwaffe assigned 100,000 of these female troops (along with an estimated 900,000 men) to anti-aircraft batteries.
In a marked departure from the early days of the war when German leaders proclaimed that Russia's use of women soldiers demonstrated they were a weak enemy who would easily be defeated by 1945 Hitler approved the formation of coed guerrilla units and all female battalions in the Volkstrum,.
Gertrud Scholz-Klink, a Nazi leader, formed battalions of women to carry on the final defense of Germany.
